How long does it take?
The exam time takes approximately 10 minutes; the average visit takes approximately one-halfhour.

Does it hurt?

You may experience brief discomfort. Scheduling your exam after your menstrual period when breasts are less tender can help relieve any discomfort.

When should women get a routine mammogram?

Every woman age 40 or older should have an annual mammogram.

What is Mammography?

A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray of your breast.

Is Mammography safe?

Today's mammograms are generally considered safe, quick, and relatively painless. The radiation from modern mammography equipment is considered so low that it does not contribute to the cause of cancer in healthy cells.

What can mammography evaluate?

Mammography can evaluate the soft tissue of the breast.

Mammography personnel include:

* Physicians with specialized knowledge and training in reading mammograms. All mammograms are read twice at Papastavros' Associates by a radiologist and by our R2 CAD. This is a quality control measure for improved accuracy.

* Radiologic technologists with advanced qualifications or equivalent education and experience perform mammograms.

What can I expect from an exam?
The following is an explanation of a typical exam. Exams may vary based on individual patient.

You will not feel anything when the actual mammogram x-ray is taken. However, in order to get the sharpest image of your breast, your breast tissue must be compressed (flattened) against a special device.

How should I prepare?
Don't wear powder, perfume, or deodorant in your breast or underarm area. If your breasts get tender around the time of your menstrual period, it is suggested that you schedule your mammogram for another time of the month.
