How long does it take?
The exam itself takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes; however, please allow additional time for paper work.

Does it hurt?
No. The test itself is relatively painless depending on the patient’s condition.

Does insurance pay for testing?

Some plans do, including Medicare, although they may have certain requirements. Call your insurance company to find out if this test is covered.
How often do I need testing?
Most people only need one every few years. Your health care provider may order tests more often to monitor treatment.

What is Bone Densitometry?
Bone density testing measures the strength of your bones by testing their hardness. Bones may get less dense for several reasons and is a natural process that starts in mid life. For some people, it can start earlier. Bone Density testing will help your health-care provider recommend ways to help prevent additional bone loss and strengthen weak bones.

How does it work?

Bone densitometry uses a narrow beam of radiation to measure the density of bones.

What can it evaluate?

A Bone Densitometry test evaluates osteoporosis -- a disease that increases bone loss making them thin and brittle. The results can be:
  • Loss of height or a hump on your back.

  • Chronic pain.

  • Loss of movement caused by fractures.

  • Higher risk of hip and spine fractures.
Is Bone Densitometry safe?
Any x-ray procedure has a risk of radiation; however, it is minimal.

What can I expect from an exam?

The following is an explanation of a typical exam. Exams may differ based on the individual patient.Bone Density testing is painless and safe, and there is very little risk involved. You will be weighed, asked medical questions, and asked to lie on a table. A sponge will be wrapped around your ankle to keep the hip in position. Images and data will be acquired and the entire test will take approximately 20 minutes.

How do I prepare?

Dress comfortably, but do not wear clothes with metal buttons, buckles, or zippers. There is a weight limit for the table, so you may be asked your weight when scheduling your appointment. For more information, click Preparations.
